The Kane County Coroner’s Office is working with the Elgin Police Department in an ongoing investigation regarding a man who was killed in a forklift accident at Hitachi Transport System, 370 River Ridge Road, according to a Coroner’s Office news release and media reports.

According to an article in the Daily Herald, Elgin police and fire personnel responded at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3, to Hitachi Transport System, a provider of transportation and logistics services including ocean freight transport, air freight transport, contract logistics, customs brokerage and supply chain management.

Police said Knabusch, 38, of Carpentersville was found by co-workers, caught between the side of the forklift he had been driving and a metal cage that contained freight.

The Coroner’s Office received a report at around 4:24 p.m. Thursday, June 3, from the Advocate Sherman Hospital Emergency Room reporting the Knabusch’s death.

Knabusch was transported to the Kane County morgue, where an autopsy was performed on Friday, June 4, 2021. The preliminary cause of death was “asphyxia due to a forklift mishap.”

Toxicology samples were sent to a forensic lab for further analysis.
